Rabbi Brown from temple Shalom very kindly came to talk to the children. She explained who she was and how she would be equivalent to our priests. She brought mezuzahs and explained what they were, how they contained Jewish laws on scrolls, and how they are fastened to door frames in keeping with Jewish law.
me•zu•zah
/məˈzo͝ozə/
noun
a parchment inscribed with religious texts and attached in a case to the doorpost of a Jewish house as a sign of faith.
Finally, she handed out pages with “Shalom” written in Hebrew on it, pointing out that it would be read from right to left. She also handed out little pieces of paper so that the children would be able to create a mosaic, or alternately colour in.
We are very grateful to Rabbi Brown for kindly coming to visit us and talk to us. Our special guest was warmly welcomed by the parish and was received with much interest by our parents. It was a wonderful, interfaith moment and has inspired me to look more into our combined heritage for future lessons.
